Butts a Big Problem on Beaches

According to the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, cigarette filters top the list of litter collected during international beach cleanups. It is estimated that 1.69 billion pounds (845,000 tons) of butts wind up in the sand, and that’s throwing fuel onto the fire for some e-cigarette manufacturers who think this trend indicates another ancillary benefit of their products—e-cigarettes aren’t reliant on paper made from trees to wrap tobacco, which means if more smokers used e-cigarettes on beaches, we’d likely see fewer discarded cigarette butts on our beaches (leaving more room for the butts that are considered indigenous to our shorelines).
