Debate ignites on e-cigarettes

Responding to an editorial in the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel, an executive of an electronic cigarette accessory company said the writer incorrectly stated many facts about the e-cigarette industry and its products.

The writer, Dr. Micheal Miller, stated that most e-cigarettes vaporize nicotine in ethylene glycol, an ingredient in antifreeze, and that the health effects of secondhand exposure from the "mist" emitted from the tip of e-cigarettes is not known. He also criticized the e-cigarette industry for marketing the devices as an unproven smoking-cessation aid.

In a followup op-ed piece, Heidi Braun, chief operating officer at Johnson Creek Enterprises, a manufacturer of liquid for e-cigarettes, responded by saying that responsible companies don't market e-cigarettes as smoking-cessation devices and that ethylene glycol is not used in e-cigarettes. "The ingredient Miller is confused about is propylene glycol, or PG. Listed on the Food and Drug Administration's Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) list, PG is found in many products we use on a regular basis, from cough syrups to toothpastes, from shampoos to a vast array of liquid food flavorings," writes Braun.

Braun also points out that Miller incorrectly implies that e-cigarettes behave like traditional cigarettes, but in reality the mist he refers to only comes from e-smokers' mouths when they exhale because the devices only activate during inhalation.

"I was deeply disappointed to read Dr. Micheal Miller's op-ed about e-cigarettes ... Miller doesn't have his facts correct about e-smoking, and, as a physician, his words unfortunately carry a lot of clout," writes Braun.
